When a performer of eminence, universally respected and admired, decides to end his or her public performances, a gap is felt that in today's world of music, so generously blessed with uniquely talented performers, can be expected soon to be filled. Two of 'The Three Tenors' are still with us, and already four tenors are stepping in their wake.
Not so in the case of Alfred Brendel's often declared intention to end his unique performing career. His leaving the concert platform leaves a gap that is not, and cannot be, filled by another artist, however eminent and brilliant.
Brendel, eschewing the trappings of mere virtuosity, a field in which he could have also been a paragon of virtues, established a figure unique in subjecting the masterpieces of his chosen field of the Viennese Classics to a deep, almost philosophical analysis, and so creating new standards by which we can now value and admire these works in their true perspective.
